Occult Classic Daytime Drama
DARK
SHADOWS
1966-1971

Creator Dan Curtis
1928-2006
If one could select the
genres of the classic television programs
that have endured best over the years, chances are the daytime
soap
opera would rank pretty high on the list, the domestic and
interpersonal plotlines appealing as they usually did (and still
do)
almost exclusively to women who desire their daily fix away from
the drudgeries of real life.
But in the case of Dan
Curtis' "Dark Shadows", the audience
broadened far beyond housewives. The usual domestic familial
melodramas were replaced by the mysteries, curses, and spiritual
battles of Maine's Collins clan, and instead of your average,
wooden
hunk to attract the attention of lady viewers, the writers
developed one of daytime television's most unusual and enduring
anti-heroes - Barnabas Collins, tormented vampire from the 18th
century.
And the kids flocked home after school to watch these gothic
adventures
with their moms.
It would be too silly to
go into detail here about this program when so
many links will be provided to other sites that will give you all
the
plotlines, news, scoop, and details that dozens of hardcore
Shadows fans already worked so hard to provide for the
entertainment
of their readers. So let it suffice that this "bio" of
"Dark Shadows"
is but a brief introduction to the concept of the show, with a
list of
Mad Molly's favorite memories and thoughts of the show.
* As a young girl in the
1960s, there is no way I would ever have
watched a regular soap opera. This soap gave me and all my family
something to enjoy together back in the days where there was only
one television set in the house!
* Being a literature
buff, I was and am delighted at how many
classic horror and gothic stories were sources of gleaning for
the
idea folks at "Dark Shadows". "The Turn of the
Screw", "Dracula",
"The Picture of Dorian Gray", "Wuthering
Heights", "Jane Eyre" - if
you love the classic horror novels, you'll find some of your
favorites
have been adapted to the "Dark Shadows" plotline.
* The lovely Joan
Bennett as family matriarch Elizabeth Collins
Stoddard - she stabilized the show with her feminine yet firm
command
over her clan. I always marvel at her ability to portray
steel-spined
strength and vulnerability at the same time. And what a fashion
plate
she was for a tough-as-nails recluse with a closetful of secrets!
* There were some really
funny characters on the show, with my
favorite comic relief being Roger Collins (as played by Louis
Edmonds).
You could love and hate and
laugh at the man - especially when Louis /
Roger would flub his lines. (DS newbies...do research at the
links
to find the most hilarious blooper. HINT: Louis Edmonds used
another word for "ancestors".)
* Speaking of bloopers,
this show had more than its fair share in the
era of limited technology, budgets, and time. Jonathan Frid,
who played Barnabas Collins, had an especially hard row to hoe at
times since as a stage actor he was used to memorizing one script
over a reasonable period of time and performing it repeatedly.
(Say
what you want about soap operas, those folks have to be very
quick
learners.) And because of technical limitations and the time
constraints,
if there was a flubbed line or even a camera knocked over,
chances are
those goofs would turn up in an episode. Some view this as
evidence of
a bad show; for me, it just increases its entertainment value
compared to
the over-teched gloss of today's productions.
* I well recall through
some personal reflections and the spate of old
teen magazines the revitalization of the show with the appearance
of
19th century werewolf and ghost Quentin Collins (played by David
Selby)
into the plotline. Did muttonchop sideburns ever look as sexy?
* "Dark
Shadows" was a favorite game played by my siblings and
neighbors when we were kids. We'd recreate the episodes and
characters well into the northern summer nights as we converted
porches and ditches and the woods in the back of our yards
leading
to the lake into the environs of Collinwood.
* "Dark
Shadows" fans are probably the most receptive to the
concept of sequels or remakes. The series' Barnabas Collins
storyline
was revamped in the early 1990s as a mini-series, much to the
delight
of DS admirers who were intrigued to see how the 1960s plotline
and
mores were updated. Recent talk of another
"resurrection" of DS
attracted the attention of fans, although it would seem the
project has
been shelved.
* Most of the principals
of the cast of "Dark Shadows" were
and are extremely good-natured about meeting with their fans at
conventions, and there is even an audio broadcast of "Return
to
Collinwood", a decades-later sequel to the soap opera
featuring
many favorite characters.
* Among the actors who
starred on "Dark Shadows" and went on to
bigger fame on other shows: David Selby (Quentin Collins, went
on to star in "Falcon Crest"), Dana Elcar (Sheriff
Patterson,
went on to "The Greatest American Hero"), Conrad Bain
(innkeeper
at Collinsport Inn, went on to star in "Maude" and
"Diff'rent Strokes"),
Kate Jackson (Daphne Harridge, later the star of "Charlie's
Angels"
and "The Scarecrow and Mrs. King"), Louis Edmonds
(Roger Collins,
later Langley Wallingford on the soap opera "All My
Children"),
and Harvey Keitel. Harvey Keitel?
Yep, according to IMDb and
"The Dark Shadows Almanac", the edgy actor had a couple
of
appearances back in 1966 as an extra in Collinsport's biggest
(and
maybe only) hangout, "The Blue Whale"!
* Interested in reading
about "Dark Shadows"? There are truly so
many books about the show and the stars that I can only encourage
readers to visit the sites listed below, as well as your favorite
online book
dealer, to get a list of the titles.
* The series is being
released on DVD, bit by bit, and many of the
episodes starting with the appearance of Barnabas Collins are
already
available. For those who don't have the pin money, you usually
will
be able to rent them on-line or at your local major video rental
outlet. The pre-Barnabas episodes were released on VHS, but they
are getting increasing difficult to obtain as whole set.
* "Dark
Shadows" fans on-line - what can I say about them except
I love 'em and they are so dedicated that many of them have
obviously
spent a great deal of loving time and effort sharing their
passion
with others? The list of sites below will attest to that - I
thank and
blame them for making me take the time to
create as comprehensive
a list of the best sites for "Shadows" maniacs and
newbies.
* This site with its own
info and photo galleries will primarily focus
on the early years as I rewatch this classic series myself to
refresh
my ardor and to catch up with all the other fans, but there are
many,
many sites for the "Dark Shadows" novice or expert to
review to find
out all the information they desire!
